Swim lessons and new teeth and crawling (Oh My!)

Despite my "fugitive in hiding" style absence from the blog for the last two months, there has been A LOT going on around here with our little lady. For the past three Mondays we have been off to the gym for baby swim lessons. We are happy to report that Mayzie loves the pool, but would probably prefer it was a little warmer. We have to get her little robe on her really quick when she gets out or her teeth start to chatter (more on the chompers later).

So far we've floated on our backs, floated on our tummies, passed her back and forth like a sack of potatoes, recited some very funny pool songs ("if you're happy and you know it get your tummy wet," you know, the classics), and even gone under water (twice). We are happy to report that all this has been tear-free and that we've seen more smiles than frowns.

I also mentioned some teeth. We're up to 3 (and a half) now! The first top tooth came in last week and the second one looks like it'll be shortly behind. Teething hasn't been super-fun, but overall not so bad this time around. All these teeth have also come with new responsibility (for all of us). First off, Mayzie is eating all kinds of new foods now. Fun things like bananas, avocado, these little rice puff things, bread, cheese, and sweet potatoes! If anyone has any fun ideas for new foods to try, let us know. Then there's the responsibility for us. We are not awesome at remembering to wipe those little chompers off, but hopefully that'll come with (not a lot) of time.

We also have a very mobile baby on our hands these days. Mayzie is crawling everywhere, trying to get into everything, and picking up a lot of dog hair as she does it. Unfortunately, dog hair isn't the only thing of Lincoln's she's picking up... she's also obsessed with his toys. It is like she has some sort of sonar on those things. Around corners, in the dark, doesn't really matter what the situation, if she can get there, she'll find one. One of my favorite things to do these days is watch her push a ball around the floor and chase it. She'll try to grab her ball, it'll roll away, she'll watch until it stops, then she'll go after it. Funny what amuses you when you have a baby.

Last, but not least, we have a bunch of snow here now! We got to take Mayzie out to sit in it on Sunday in her VERY cute little pink snowsuit from her Great Auntie Cyndi. We got some pictures, but they really don't do it justice.

And, for the one or two of you who care... here's a picture of Lincoln. (If you look close, Mayzie is in the background)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! I'm sure I'll put some more pictures up soon, but hopefully we see most of you in person soon too.

7 months old, 6 month photos

So this took way too long, but I thought people might want to see some of the 6 month photos we took of Mayzie. It was so fun taking the pictures of her ourselves... and so cheap. We also want to give a very big thank you to Alicia for taking time out of her weekend to take come and take some family pictures for us. They turned out great! (At least we think so)

Niagara Falls

Let me start by giving some advice. Don't go to Niagara Falls unless you:

A. Love huge crowds of inconsiderate people
B. Love paying a lot of money for all the food you eat
C. Happen to be in the area

The Falls are cool, don't get me wrong, but there are so many cooler things to see in the U.S. and Canada, that the crowds are just not worth it. Also, DO NOT go to the buffet at Skylon Tower! It was quite possibly the worst dining experience of my life.

Anyway, enough complaining, let's get to the fun stuff!

So Mayzie finally, after 5 1/2 months, go to meet her Connecticut cousins! Based on the 24 hours or so we were with them, I conclude that she likes them a lot, especially Brooks.

We got to take the boat ride out to the Horseshoe Falls on Friday (unfortunately w/out Lacey and Mayzie). That was a lot of fun, and the kids really enjoyed it!

After everyone else was tucked away in their hotels room, I snuck out and got some nighttime photos of the Falls. I'm not sure how excited I am that they light them up like a rainbow, but I have to admit it is kinda cool.

Oh yeah, we also got some good pictures from the aforementioned Skylon Tower (gross).

Besides hanging out with the Pennells, I would have to say the highlight of my trip was seeing Wayne Gretzky's childhood home where his dad, Walter, still lives. I was a bit bummed, however, to find out after we left that Walter is incredibly inviting and probably would have let us in the see all the memorabilia in his basement if we would have knocked (sad face... single tear). Well, just another reason to go back to Brantford, Ontario soon! :)

Overall, a very fun quick weekend away for our first family vacation! We are so happy my Mommy was able to join us, and we have our fingers crossed that Mayzie starts liking car rides a bit more soon!

So many new things!

We have had quite the last couple of weeks here at the Mayzie Smieja household! We had Auntie Denise and her puppy Lily here for a whole week to visit. While they were here we went out for dinner, went to the beach, and watched the dogs play A LOT. After they left the roofers came to put a new roof on our house and Lacey and Mayzie made a day trip to the beach to get out of the noisy house for a while. Yesterday we had another guest arrive... Grandma Smieja is here! Well, the excitement has been tempered so far because Mayzie has not be very happy this morning. She's a little tired.

But enough chit chat, on to the big news!

We have officially started to eat some real food... if you consider finely ground oatmeal mixed up with some breast milk real food. The video is not her first try, but it is a much better video than I got the first time when she was crying and sitting in the chair that is still way too big for her.

Makin' a mess

Our first attempt... the chair is a little too big for her.

Last Sunday, less than 8 hours after her Auntie Denise left, Mayzie decided she would roll over the first time. Mayzie was laying in one of her two favorite places kicking and smiling when she decided it was time she got herself on her tummy. Two things about that story I find funny:

  1. That favorite place to lay is the dining room table. The other favorite is her changing pad in her bedroom.
  2. She rolled from her back to her tummy, even though she really doesn't like being on her tummy very much. She quickly got frustrated and we had to roll her back over.
I would post the very cute video of her first roll over, but we didn't film it. :( Below is my interpretation of what happened though, sort of skipping the intermediate steps. :)

Anyway, Mayzie has not rolled over since. I think she remembers how frustrating it was to end up on her belly and not be able to turn over. So, we'll see if we can get her to do it again and get a video that's even better than the pictures above.

Well, only a few short days after that first roll over we got our first real laughs. Turns out all it took was a huge bout of hiccups from her Daddy and she was giggling like crazy.

And of course I can't put up a new blog post without adding some pictures. Happy 5th of July!

Always loving kicking on her play mat

Look at how strong she is!

Remembering my Dad

As of late, my blog posts have all revolved around our beautiful Mayzie Ann. I am happy to report that she is doing well, and doing cuter things (seemingly) by the hour.

I thought that today I would devote some time, though, to remembering my Dad. It was four years ago today that my life changed forever when I got the call that my Dad had been in a motorcycle accident. I'll never forget that call, sitting at my desk in graduate school, trying to figure out if I needed to go get another cup of coffee and counting down the days until I could write my dissertation, defend it, and move on. The phone call came from the sheriff of Morrison County, and he was contacting me because he had been unable to reach my Mom on her cell phone. I'll also never forget having to call my Mom and sisters to tell them the news, getting on that red eye flight from San Diego to Boston, the drive to the airport, or the feeling I had when we found out that he was not going to make it. My only wish now is that no one would have to go through that pain, but it has happened millions of times before and it will happen again to millions of people over the course of time. My intention today, though, is not to dwell on the sadness of those days following my Dad's accident or the sadness of every day since, but rather to focus on what an amazing man my Dad was.

The picture above is the one I used in the Dedication page of my dissertation. The page read "This dissertation is dedicated to my Dad who loved and supported me always and worked harder than anyone I have ever known to support his family." The words on that page could not be more true. My Dad spent so much time with me going to hockey practices, driving me to away games, building skating rinks for me in the winter, teaching me how to drive (tractor, car and motorcycle), playing ping pong with me in the basement, playing horse and 1 on 1 in the driveway, and the list goes on and on, that I sometimes took for granted that all those things were not his full time job. I'll never forget when I was invited to try out for the Minnesota Selects All-Star hockey team in Fergus Falls and Dad got up with me at 5:00 am (which, in retrospect, was not even early for him) to drive to Fergus Falls for tryouts. When I didn't make the team, there was never any disappointment in his face or voice, but pride that I had tried. I was, am and always will be in awe of his ability to be both fiercely competitive, and also annoyingly humble.

I mentioned above that Dad built a rink for me every winter so I could skate whenever I wanted, and trust me, I took advantage of it. What still amazes me is how much he did not want me to be a hockey player when I was little. In case you are reading this and didn't know, my Dad was quite the wrestler in high school. Well, I seem to recall stories about how Jim Smieja's kid would never play hockey... he was going to be a wrestler! Little did Dad know, I would not like getting beat up by other sweaty five year olds, and would instead rather be on the ice like my big brothers Ben and Josh LeBlanc. So, with reluctance, Dad let me join hockey at the ripe old age of 5, and by the time I was 8 or 9 years old he was coaching my team.

The picture above is one of my favorites ever of Dad. When I picture him, it is always in winter gear. I guess it makes sense since most of my best memories (hockey, skating outside and ice fishing) are with him in the winter, and some of my worst (bailing hay, building fences and picking up cow manure) are with him in the summer. Actually, that's not true, I always look back on those times of hard, and sometimes stinky work, as some of the best of my life. Anyway, back to the picture. So you might think, if you don't know my Dad, that the picture above is him venturing out of the heated ice house to try and find a better spot. You'd be wrong. You see, until I moved out of the house and no longer went ice fishing regularly, there was no ice house. Often times, in fact, there wasn't even a seat. We went out, dressed in twenty-six layers of clothing, stood with our backs to the wind, and I hoped we wouldn't catch any fish because I didn't want to take my mittens off to get them off the hook. Despite the conditions, though, it was always fun to spend time with Dad on the lake, whether hot or cold, windy or calm, fish or no fish.

So, today on the four year anniversary of the worst day of my life, as I sit here crying and writing this, I can't help but be incredibly happy and thankful for the 27 years I had with my Dad. He was a role model not only to Christina, Denise and myself, but to countless other kids who's lives he touched, hundreds of co-workers at Camp Ripley, the Granite Works and the Morrison County Jail who had the privilege of working with him, the inmates that would find him on the rare occasion he was out at the bar and buy him a beer, and pretty much anyone who ever knew him well enough to see how great he was.

So today,
and six days from now when I celebrate my first Father's Day,
and the days in between
and every day for the rest of my life,
I'll miss my Dad and wish he was still here to watch my kids grow up, help me with repairs on my house, and take me fishing. I love you Dad, and happy early Father's Day.

Mom and Dad on their first date. :)

A couple quick Memorial Day videos

I hope someone else enjoys these as much as we do! Our little Mayzie has quite the animated reaction to us blowing on her face. Happy Memorial Day!

Has it really been over a month?

Alright, so I've been slacking on the blog, and I would blame it on being busy, but Mikey Keliher has been posting some things recently about how successful people don't complain about being busy, so I'll try to abstain. Anyway, I've been enjoying my spare time so much between hanging out with Mayzie and Lacey, playing with Lincoln, and working on the house, that I haven't thought about the blog in a while.

Mayzie is growing up so fast it makes my head spin. She's already about 13 pounds, is gaining more and more head control every day, and is starting to make a TON of cute noises... when she's happy. :)

We've had her out on more outings lately, which has been great. Our friend Eric was in town last weekend and Mayzie visited her first 5 breweries of her young life. She hasn't tried beer yet, but it's only a matter of time with us two hooligans as her parents. Mayzie has also found a new favorite toy. She's been laying on her play mat more lately, and she recently discovered a small lion that hangs from one of the supports on the side. We're not sure why, but she will stare at that thing and smile for a very long time. Indeed, she smiles at that lion much more than she smiles at her Daddy. :)

Anyway, enjoy some pictures, and hopefully my next post will come sooner than this one did!

Cute.

 Very cute.

 Still cute.

 Holding her giraffe.

 Extreme close-up.

Lincoln has officially taken over one of our couch cushions.

This is the family picture Lacey put on Facebook, but I did you all the favor of cropping out Lincoln's boy business. You're welcome!

Oh yeah, we did some more work on the garden a few weeks ago too, added some boards to walk out on for weeding.

A picture from today, the garden is coming in strong!

Hoppy Easter Everyone!

It's been a few weeks again since I've shared pics of Mayzie, so I suppose it's that time again! She is really starting to get chubby, it appears Mommy has been feeding her too good. She's already up to almost 10 lbs, and is growing out of more clothes every day!

Anyway, Happy Easter, and enjoy some pics and a video of Mayzie Ann!

Thanks for the fancy Easter outfit Auntie Jasmyne, and thanks for the pretty Spring blankets John, Melissa and Sasha! They made for some pretty cute Easter morning pictures :)

I know, it looks like Mayzie is easting the carrot, but she's not :)

Enjoy Mayzie's video, not too exciting, but she is so freakin' cute!

Making a happy face for Daddy!
